Diploma Thesis:
The typographic tattoo / Marked by Joy
My diploma thesis deals with the typographic tattoo and, moreover, focuses on the correlation between formal aesthetics and intentions of a typographic tattoo. The thesis comes up against a difficulty, i.e. there is no field of study approaching typographic tattoos as a topic of research. The chief purpose of my thesis was a deeper approach to the field of tattoo typefaces. The complex of themes has to be taken from various academic disciplines, e.g. the field of sociology, history, psychology and design, to fill in scientific gaps. Cognition processes of reading tattoo typefaces are essential aspects to figure out their effect. The main chapter examines particularly tattoo typefaces concerning the relationship of formal aesthetics and intentions and, further on, attempts to classify tattoo typefaces within their formal aspects and intentions. Finally, theoretical findings will be linked with the authors masterpiece »Marked by Joy«.
